Posted at 2010/04/03 18:32 | Posted in 문화 샤넬. 유명 브랜드의 이름이다. 이 브랜드명은 창립자인 가브리엘 샤넬의 이름이기도 하다. 프랑스 소뮈르 출생의 가브리엘 샤넬은 가난한 행상인의 딸로 태어나 수녀원에서 어린 시절을 보냈다. 그녀가 자란 수녀원은 후에 그녀의 디자인 관에 영향을 주기도 하였다.
성인이 된 가브리엘은 코코(coco)라는 별칭을 가지고 노래를 부르기도 하였고 여러 사회의 사람들과 어울려 지내곤 했다. 그러던 중 그녀의 여러 연인들의 도움을 받아 제 1차 세계대전 때 프랑스 파리의 캉봉가 21번지에 모자가게인 ‘샤넬모드’를 열게 되었고 그로부터 3년 후인 1913년에 도빌에 첫 부티크를 열게 되었다.

샤넬은 남성적 특성을 여성의복에 나타내었다. 당시 여성패션의 전통을 깨고 자켓, 넥타이와 같은 남성복을 여성화시켜 의상을 만들었다.
그녀는 허리가 잘록하게 들어가며 발끝까지 덮어버리는 드레스를 던져버리고 슬림한 직사각형태의 옷을 만들었다. 발목위로 살짝 올라가는 치마길이는 사람들을 놀라게 하기에 충분했고 그녀는 직선적인 디자인을 통해 여성들의 생활을 좀 더 편리하게 해주었고 활동적으로 만들어 주었다. 그녀는 자신이 입고 싶은 옷만 만들었다. 남성 디자이너들이 이끌었던 기존의 패션계를 그녀의 새로운 스타일과 천재적인 재능과 감각으로 주도해 나갔다.

1959년 가브리엘은 샤넬N°5을 만들었고 그 때부터 그녀는 향수, 화장품, 악세서리에 까지 손을 뻗치게 되었고 그녀의 입지는 절정을 넘어 정말 최고조로 치닫게 된다. 그렇게 가브리엘은 승승장구하며 여러 유명인사들과 연인으로 지내게 되는데 그중한명이 윈스턴 처칠이었다. 샤넬은 한 때 일을 잠시 그만두고 쉬며 로맨스를 즐기기도 했지만 일에 대한 열정으로 평생 독신으로 살았다.

파란만장한 인생을 살고 성공을 이뤄낸 가브리엘 샤넬, 그녀는 정말 존경받을만한 여성상이다.
